Abstract Title: | Longitudinal E-CLASS Study of Physics Majors at a Masters-granting, Comprehensive University |
---|---|
Abstract: | As the PER community expands research into upper-level physics lectures, effective assessment instruments are needed for upper-level physics lab instructors, especially those wanting to implement recommendations from AAPT/APS reports on laboratories and undergraduate curriculum. E-CLASS, Colorado Learning Attitudes about Science Survey – Experimental Physics, is one instrument assessing students' attitudes, habits, and strategies about laboratory work and comparing them with professional responses. At a Masters-granting, Comprehensive University, E-CLASS data from required laboratory courses for majors (introductory through advanced) were analyzed using repeated t-tests, via gains and normalized gains. Introductory student scores were consistent with national scores, with an overall shift toward less expert/professional attitudes. Intermediate and advanced lab pre- and post-test scores were higher than national averages, with an overall shift toward more expert/professional attitudes. Modifications made to each upper-level lab course, together with laboratory experiences prior to upper-level labs, may explain these results. Although one type of institution was examined, E-CLASS can provide insight into what works/needs improvement at any institution offering more than one laboratory experience for majors. |
