Abstract Title: Variations on Effort Grading in Introductory Physics for Life Science – Lessons Learned
Abstract: Effort grading in a project-based introductory physics for life science course was motivated by the need to encourage some students to submit timely drafts of their "mini-project" homework assignments and to submit revisions after feedback.    As this course had no exams, missing or unrevised "mini-project" assignments or project elements had course grade consequences like missing exams.  In the first rendition, submission of drafts and submissions of revisions were given substantial effort credit independent of quality of the submissions, and the quality of submissions was graded separately.   Due to Covid onset, deadlines were greatly extended, but it seems the effort grading made little difference to those students most egregious in lack of submissions.   In the two subsequent semesters, variations on effort grading were made corresponding to curricular changes teaching in online and blended formats.   In these cases, the effort grading was appreciated by students in general but, again, failed to support those students with the most egregious submission failures.   Dialogue with those students revealed deeper issues.
