Abstract: This study examined the relationships among gender, membership in racial and/or ethnic groups underrepresented in engineering, and persistence in engineering majors at a large, state flagship university. Among students declaring an engineering major upon entering college, gender was not a significant predictor of engineering degree completion, but female students were more likely to change to a non-engineering major and less likely to leave college without any degree. Students who are underrepresented minorities in engineering departed engineering by changing majors and by leaving the institution without degrees at higher rates than other students, and the patterns of attrition for these students were qualitatively different. High school preparation was a significant predictor of graduating with an engineering degree, but the majority of the difference in graduation rate of underrepresented students remained unexplained after accounting for academic preparation.
