Abstract Title: Validation of a key components framework for characterizing informal physics programs
Abstract Type: Contributed Poster Presentation
Abstract: Informal physics programs provide an opportunity for physicists and members of the public to engage in learning outside of the traditional classroom setting. In this project, we investigate the various factors that influence the functionality of these programs. Using an organizational theory perspective, we have produced a framework of "key components" that the facilitators of informal physics programs have influence over. These components, including recruitment of personnel, program content and design, and interactions with the audience, are generalizable across a diverse range of programs. Here, we report the process of revising and validating this framework through the qualitative analysis of interviews with lead program facilitators. In addition, we discuss the possibility of developing practitioner-oriented tools from this framework that facilitators can use to assess and improve their programs.
