Abstract Title: | Optional Reflections as Metacognition and Reassessment Opportunities |
---|---|
Abstract Type: | Contributed Poster Presentation |
Abstract: | In two introductory physics for life science courses with different student profiles, student activities were assessed in lieu of exams. Included were life scenario problem sets, with conceptual questions, real data to interpret and choose from, and questions about the relevance of their numerical result to the life scenario. Students had opportunities to improve their grade by doing optional reflections after possible answers were provided. They were instructed to show their original and revised answers with reflection, which included recognizing their misconceptions and what they now understand better. An analysis of these student reflections was undertaken, including metacognition characterizations of responses, to be used for rubric development for student use in future reflections. Comparisons were also obtained between scenarios, individual students, and type of student. |
