Abstract Title: | Teaching physics in a prison: lessons learnt |
---|---|
Abstract Type: | Contributed Poster Presentation |
Abstract: | People incarcerated in prisons face extreme challenges in their quest to gain access to higher education. It is important to keep the most under-served population of our communities in mind, while efforts are made in making Physics education more inclusive. Teaching college-level Physics in a non-traditional setting inside a prison environment necessitates adapting the curriculum and pedagogy of established Physics courses on college/university campuses. I will describe some of the challenges involved in doing so, and the lessons learnt from mentoring students inside the prison, from organizing workshops, and from teaching a for-credit college Physics course, all as part of a prison education program named Education Justice Project at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. |
