Abstract: | Note: This workshop has been cancelled. Queer theory, a collection of critical theory emerging from and at times in contrast to Foucault, asks us to transgress binaries, to contest harmful ways of being and knowing, to learn to be more comfortable within Borderlands (Anzaldúa), and to be truly committed to engaging issues of social injustice. However, theory by itself can be inaccessible and lack the necessary impact on injustice that queer theory itself calls for. This talk offers a movement towards queer praxis, the connection of theory with practice, giving suggestions on some ideas for queering our classrooms, our research, and the ways in which we navigate our professional lives. Taking into account adjacent forms of justice work (i.e. racial justice, transformative justice, disability justice), we will discuss disrupting binaries and harmful practices in the Academy, in our pedagogy, in our research, and lives, and co-create tangible ways to move away from either/or thinking and towards collective liberation with a queer flavor. |
