Abstract Title: Exploring Undergraduate Students’ Experiences with Standards-Based Grading.
Abstract Type: Contributed Poster Presentation
Abstract: Over the academic year of 2022-2023, a faculty learning community of seven faculty across multiple campuses of Penn State and across multiple science/math disciplines have implemented Standards-Based Grading (SBG) in classes ranging from small (<25 students) to large (~500 students). In most implementations, students' letter grade was determined by their proficiency on learning target quizzes evaluated on pass/fail with multiple retakes possible. To date, our retrospective qualitative study includes a survey (N=186), 13 individual interviews and 3 focus groups. In our interviews, we purposefully oversample negative viewpoints and we have one non-traditional (adult) learner and one student from a smaller campus. We find that students perceive the control and flexibility of SBG has increasing motivation and reducing stress but some report procrastination and test-reset behaviors such as studying for the quiz. Attending to students' self-regulated learning skills will be crucial for the success of these grading approaches.
