| Abstract: | Transparency tools enhance the teaching of several concepts in physics, and the idea of this method of a transparency overlay may inspire additional applications. Transparency tools are inexpensive handouts that have robust pedagogical value since they can vividly illustrate complex mathematical and physical concepts and be used to overlay textbook illustrations, student homework, or even computer screen images. They are produced simply by printing or photocopying figures onto transparency film and then cutting to the desired size. This presentation illustrates several specific tools that were designed to address points that are often challenging to some introductory physics students: continuous rotation of axes for inclined plane problems, direction of the vector cross product, moment of inertia, and superposition of vector fields. These have been extremely valuable to particular students individually, but learning-outcome surveys also demonstrate their value to the overall lecture cohort. |
