| Abstract: | Radoff et al. [1] introduced the study of meta-affect--feelings about feelings--in a student's experiences with uncertainty. That analysis showed two different stabilities in the student's meta-affect coupled with her epistemology, one earlier in the course and one later. Here we studied an episode of uncertainty among three students in a physics lab that showed dynamics of meta-affect and epistemology. We focused on "Abby," to argue there is evidence of coupled meta-affective and epistemological instability: She showed and expressed discomfort ("I hate physics"), but she also showed positive affect in her laughter and persistence. We suggested the complexity of the episode involved dynamics at multiple scales and included her emergent intellectual agency and the nature of her relationships with her lab partners. This study offers an agenda for future research on these dynamics. |
