| Abstract: | Graduate teaching assistantships are the primary funding mechanism for many physics and astronomy graduate students. These time-intensive roles are known to have a large impact within undergraduate introductory courses; students often spend as much "face-time" with graduate teaching assistants (GTAs) as faculty members. The experiences of GTAs are equally formative, yet often de-prioritized. This study uses the participatory action research method of photovoice (or photo-elicitation) to examine these experiences. Photovoice studies leverage images gathered by participants in response to a prompt. These images are then shared and discussed with other GTAs in a focus group interview, with the end goal of participants identifying 5-10 representative experiences. We present the representative experiences that come from a preliminary focus group of physics and astronomy GTAs at a public, research-intensive, south-eastern university. The results will show that photovoice is an effective tool to survey GTA experiences in the goal of improving graduate programs. |
