| Abstract: | Students of different ethnicities and socioeconomic backgrounds have different life experiences that can result in barriers to entry into STEM fields. Physics, in particular, has low gender and racial diversity, and the percentage of underrepresented minorities diminishes the higher one goes in the academic ladder. This study seeks to identify the systemic inequities within educational institutions that hinder the participation of underrepresented groups in physics. Our data collection involved semi-structured interviews with undergraduate physics majors at an R1 university and K-12 educators in a nearby ethnically diverse school district. The narratives provided by the participants offer valuable insights into the challenges and obstacles faced by individuals aspiring to enter STEM fields and successes that could aid in developing interventions and finding viable solutions. Our work underscores the importance of addressing these issues at various levels, from policy-making to institutional practices, to foster a more inclusive and equitable environment for all. |
