| Abstract: | Peer Coaches (Learning Assistants and Peer Led Team Leaders) have been employed in introductory courses for over two decades to promote the learning of STEM content. Numerous studies have shown that their work improves student outcomes and their own learning outcomes. However, there has been far less work about Peer Coaches and metacognition. To investigate how Peer Coaches could facilitate the metacognitive development of their students, we begin with a teacher knowledge framework that is used in preparing pre-service teachers. This framework was then modified to be limited to the traditional work of Peer Coaches and to specify metacognitive competence as the content area. Using this framework, we analyze written data from the coaches' pedagogy course and find that coaches a) are metacognitively competent as learners, b) are metacognitively competent as facilitators, and c) have a productive orientation toward facilitating the use of metacognition by their students. |
