| Abstract Type: | Contributed Poster Presentation |
| Abstract: | This study explores the development and expression of empathy within physics faculty. Through semi-structured interviews with 19 participants and thematic coding analysis, we examine how faculty engage their identities in fostering student connections. We present distinct personas, derived from the data, that illustrate these approaches. The research sheds light on the interplay between faculty identity, empathy, and the creation of meaningful student interactions. This nuanced understanding of empathy's role in physics education culture advances our knowledge of how faculty express empathy and informs DEISJ (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Social Justice) initiatives, which often rely on empathy to drive action. |
