|---|---|
| Abstract Type: | Contributed Poster Presentation |
| Abstract: | For almost a decade, the University of Maryland (UMD) Physics Mental Health Task Force (MHTF) has worked to understand and improve the mental health of physics graduate students. Our group is run by graduate students and regularly gives mental health surveys, hosts social activities, presents results to students and faculty, and advocates for changes in our department. In this poster, we tell the story of the evolution of our group as well as present some of the data from our surveys. Specifically, we discuss the prevalence of impostor phenomenon (IP) in our department: in all six surveys we have given since 2015, 50-70% of graduate student respondents have reported frequent or severe feelings of IP. We share data-based conclusions that will be useful for students and their mentors. Our group's experience advocating for change will contribute to a collective knowledge base for change efforts in physics programs |
