| Abstract: | Studies of small group work in PER tend to focus on more talkative students while disregarding quiet students as inactive members. In our studies of introductory mechanics lab groups, we have observed that high-functioning groups of three often contain a quiet member who plays a significant role. We present a case study to focus on a quiet student and the ways they exhibit engagement and influence. We analyzed a video recording of a group of three students completing an end-of-semester lab practical experiment for time of verbal and nonverbal engagement, and identified moments where the quiet student influenced the group. We found that the quiet student was involved in the group's decision-making process, initiated phase transitions, and took on supportive roles. Understanding how quiet students demonstrate engagement and influence allows future discourse analysis to include them, but further studies need to be conducted to confirm this characterization. |
