| Abstract Title: | Whither PER? Past, Present, and Concerns about the Future |
|---|---|
| Abstract Type: | Community Connection |
| Abstract: | A foundational inspiration of this year's PERC theme is from considering the field's current status and future growth – more specifically, to address concerns about the field's current trends constructively. PER should grow as any physics field normally grows within academia, and a critical path for that growth is for diverse institution types to set up their own research groups and find ways to conduct scholarly activity, mentor student researchers, and contribute to the field appropriately. This session will focus on understanding the growth of the field, in terms of traditional topics and current trends; and within this framing, discussing current concerns, and suggesting productive ways to advance the field. I will begin discussion by offering my own thoughts for a few minutes on these topics, from my own perspective as a PUI-based PER researcher, but ultimately the session is meant to encourage participants from all institutional backgrounds to discuss these topics from their own perspectives with each other. |
