| Abstract: | Using an interview protocol developed by Lederman et al. (2002), this qualitative study examines different ways in which Indonesian pre-service physics teachers conceptualize the Nature of Science (NOS) when analyzing local socio-scientific issues (SSI) in Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia. Results reveal common misconceptions held by the participants, such as confusing scientific theories with scientific laws and equating hypotheses to "educated guess." Our findings highlight an urgent need for integrating SSI-based pedagogies into science teacher education programs to teach how NOS principles apply to ethical problem solving, thereby enhancing Indonesian preservice teachers' science literacy and teaching practices. |
