| Abstract: | Pre-service teachers play a unique dual role in education as they straddle the line between being students and emerging teachers. This dual role requires them to adopt the perspective of both the learner and the instructor which has implications on their questioning approach in varying contexts. One context is their interaction and engagement with AI to generate educational resources. This study investigates pre-service teachers' AI prompts as they develop physics-based representations for two target audiences. We have studied pre-service teachers' questions over two physics laboratory sessions where they assumed the role of a teacher in the first and the role of a student in the second. They were asked to determine and create representations to explain wave velocity to their elementary students as they play the teacher role and to explain the Ideal Gas Law to their English teacher as they play the student role. Results show that pre-service teachers tend to be more explicit in mentioning the target audience and predetermine the representation type as teachers compared to students. They also tend to generate a wider range of representations when positioned as teachers compared to students. Findings of this study have implications on pre-service teacher education and professional development programs that can focus on leveraging the teaching role of pre-service teachers not only in classroom instruction but also within their own learning. |
