Abstract Title: Drawing the Line: How Physics Education Journals are Setting Boundaries in the Age of AI
Abstract Type: Contributed Poster Presentation
Abstract: Artificial intelligence (AI) tools have changed traditional academic publishing practices, creating questions about authorship, responsibility, and integrity. This study analyzes the policies that physics education research journals are using to respond to the AI revolution in academia. The official AI policies from five leading physics education publications were analyzed to identify themes in the journals' approaches to AI integration. The findings of this study reveal a shared agreement on the core principles of a prohibition of AI tools receiving authorship credit, the requirement of an explicit disclosure of AI use, and an emphasis of human responsibility for content validity. However, there were significant differences in specificity of policies, granularity of documentation requirements, and the treatment of AI-generated images. Specifically, some journals distinguished between acceptable AI use for writing versus using AI for data generation or image creation. This study demonstrates how academic publishing is changing to integrate new AI tools.
