| Abstract: | Physics education research (PER) often includes an applied component; researchers develop and test new teaching techniques, educational materials, and learning experiences in a range of settings including classrooms, workplaces, and out-of-school settings. Such research requires careful consideration to ensure that risks to those involved (e.g., students, teachers, employees) are minimal and that potential benefits of the research are maximized. However, in practice, this is difficult work. Education research settings are complex, with variables interconnected in ways that can obscure or magnify risks. This paper illustrates the importance of the PER community addressing difficult questions about research risks and outlines potential next steps to engage in that process. |
