| Abstract: | In the 2024-2025 academic year a revised assessment structure was introduced into a standards-based introductory physics course primarily taken by biology and pre-health students. Weekly quizzes with free response questions were replaced by a combination of three midterm exams with free-response questions and on-line quizzes targeting specific, basic physics skills such as identifying known values, finding vector components, making force diagrams, unit conversions, etc. The goal of this change was to maintain the student learning benefits in both improved understanding of physics and increased physics self-efficacy while reducing the excessive assessment load of the previous approach on instructors and students. Analysis of data shows comparable student growth in physics understanding and self-efficacy and that there is a strong relationship between success on the automatically graded quizzes and success on exam questions. This poster will discuss the assessment approach, analysis of data, and next steps to improve on weaknesses identified. |
