| Abstract: | What comes to mind when you hear "science person"? Did traits like rational, structured, curious, or solitary come to mind? Are these qualities socially coded with a certain gender, race, or class? The word 'identity' has been used to describe the discursive ideas about how we think we must be to engage in science. I use critical discourse analysis to examine how students in a non-traditional physics course at CU Boulder use language to position themselves in relation to binary narratives of "science/non-science people." While many described traditional views that link science to technical talent and non-science to openness, they also challenged this dichotomy and offered nuanced perspectives. This research begins to highlight how identity in science is shaped not only by the individuals' agency but also by culturally available discourses and aims to reimagine science as more socially aware, valuing broader narratives about what being a "science person" means. |
