Abstract Title: Enhancing STEM Graduate Student Teaching: The Cultivation of Teaching Skills and Identity among Graduate Students
Abstract Type: Contributed Poster Presentation
Abstract: This study examines how Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs) develop their teaching identities through professional development (PD) and hands-on teaching experiences. While previous research has shown that PD enhances instructional practices, less attention has been paid to its role in shaping teaching identity. This study draws on data from seven focus groups (33 GTAs) conducted after a two-day pre-semester workshop in August 2023, along with 20 one-on-one interviews conducted during the academic year and 10 follow-ups in summer 2024. Using open and axial coding, the analysis identified key themes related to role perception, confidence, and instructional growth. Initially, many GTAs viewed their roles as limited to grading or content delivery. However, through PD and classroom exposure, they developed a more student-centered perspective, drawing on research-based strategies, and peer interactions. The findings highlight the need for PD programs that not only equip GTAs with teaching techniques but also support their evolving identities.
