| Abstract: | When students work together in laboratory groups, they often must negotiate who does which tasks, such as doing the experiment and writing the report. To characterize the ways that groups distribute and accomplish tasks, we analyzed video recordings of introductory design-based electromagnetism labs. We also interviewed students about their perception of their role and strengths in their lab groups. We found that while students do take up the task of working on the report to fill in a gap in what needs to get done, they may also use writing as a space for collaboration. In addition, we found that students recognize writing the report as a meaningful contribution, even if they personally don't like writing. Documenting how students view and use writing in their lab groups highlights the different ways students can show competency and can inform future work relating to student collaboration. |
