| Abstract Title: | The Five “Game Moves” of Social Moderation in Analyzing Qualitative Research Data |

| Abstract: | Although social moderation is commonly used in the learning sciences community, it is not often explicitly discussed in physics education research literature. Social moderation as a part of qualitative data analysis is the process of discussing each code among a group of coders until they come to an agreement. Researchers who use this method suggest that social moderation has the potential to increase the trustworthiness of findings. However, there is a scarcity of research describing the social moderation process and how it contributes to trustworthiness. In this poster presentation, we will provide an overview of a framework we developed for engaging in social moderation. We will elucidate the framework by providing five distinct conversational "moves" for coders to utilize when moderating. Examples of the moves will be drawn from the social moderation process we used in our quantitative ethnography study. |
