| Abstract: | This project investigated students' perceptions of care and community in physics courses designed for a fidelity to persons, balancing the science with a commitment to the growth and well-being of students. We conducted interviews with 13 students in intermediate classical mechanics at a large, public research university to see what course features students perceived as helping their learning. We found evidence that students (i) valued instructor care through building personal connections and through out-of-classroom support and (ii) valued a sense of course community, especially evident through collaborative group problem solving in office hours. Although care and community in physics learning can feel like abstract concepts, these findings illustrate that students can connect them to concrete instructor actions and course activities. |
