Our areas of interest include:

  • student understanding of specific physics concepts
  • mathematical modeling and reasoning in physics learning
  • applying dual-process theories of reasoning to physics learning
  • curriculum development and dissemination
  • professional development of physics instructors (university and K-12)



We have multiple degree programs that support physics education research projects:
  • Ph.D. and M.S. in physics, via the Department of Physics and Astronomy
  • Master of Science in Teaching, via the Maine Center for Research in STEM Education
  • Ph.D. in STEM Education, via the College of Education and Human Development and the Maine Center for Research in STEM Education
