Research in PER at Texas Tech has focused on students' qualitative and quantitative understanding of physics concepts in courses taught by traditional and non-traditional methods, students' understanding of topics in modern physics and quantum mechanics and developed a laboratory-, inquiry-based curriculum for the introductory algebra-based physics course.

A current research project, supported by an NIH grant with Kelvin Cheng, involves a large scale assessment of Texas Tech's introductory courses and labs. This work includes the development of a comprehensive assessment instrument that goes beyond conceptual inventories with Aaron Titus (HPU) to assess problem solving, laboratory skills and aspects of critical thinking, in addition to conceptual understanding.
