The University of Maryland Physics Education Group is a research group that bridges the Departments of Physics and Cognition and Instruction. Research spans issues in physics learning from first grade to graduate school.
Main themes in the group's research have been student expectations and epistemologies. The group is involved with both theoretical and observational research, building cognitive and interactional models based on real-world observations, collection of written data, and directed interviews. The group has been involved with a variety of developmental projects including A New Model Course in Quantum Physics, The Physics Suite, and Activity-Based and Epistemological Tutorials.
